WILMINGTON, Del. -- Creighton Paul Malone, 83, of Wilmington, died Thursday, (Sept. 1, 2016).

He was born May 3, 1933, in Beaver City, Neb., to I. Wayne and Ester E. (Collins) Malone. As his mother died in childbirth, he was raised by his grandparents, Earl and Ena Collins.

After graduating from Beaver City High School in 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Cowell DD547 on a six month assignment to patrol and blockade North Korea. In 1954, he attended the University of Colorado and received his PhD in physical chemistry in 1962.

He joined the DuPont Company in 1962 as a research chemist in the engineering department. He transferred to the textile fibers department and was involved with the development of several textile products, including "Antron," the first antistatic nylon carpet yarn and "Stainmaster," anti-stain nylon.

In 1985, he became a chemistry teacher at the Delaware Technical and Community College. In 1986, he was appointed Professor (Textile Science) at the University of Delaware and continued research and teaching until his retirement in 1995. He worked in Holland and Switzerland and authored over 60 scientific publications, including 13 patents.

Survivors include his wife, Dee (Denelda Bateman); children, Sheila Kreer, son, Craig Malone; three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Graveside services are Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, 11 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Beaver City with the Rev. Keith Theobald officiating.
