City of McCook firefighters Rick Metcalf, left, and Steve Yager use snow shovels to scoop up and replace river rocks washed from landscaping at the city office following a toad-strangling, gully-washer of a thunderstorm late Saturday afternoon. The rocks -- the largest about softball-size -- rode the waves to B Street two blocks south, creating traffic hazards on the highway. A city street crew used scoops and a front-end loader to move the rocks out of driving lanes. The 400 block of West Fifth on the west side of the Elks tennis courts flooded, finally receding from around a car stranded by the high water. Rain gauges throughout town read anywhere from .40 of an inch to three and four inches -- but it's hard to measure horizontal rain.
