Bruce Piercy, right, of Boys Town, North Platte, mans the seventh- eighth- and ninth-grade table, stuffing a backpack with school supplies, socks and personal hygiene items at the annual Salvation Army backpack giveaway Wednesday at McCook Christian Church in McCook. Six-year-old Raychal McRae, above, of McCook will be a first grader this fall, and she pondered, "Pink or purple? Pink or purple?" before accepting the purple one from volunteer Pat Sitzman. Volunteers gave away 160 backpacks during the first hour of the 21⁄2-hour distribution. Those who didn't make it to the Salvation Army give-away can stop by the Family Resource Center at 1010 E. Sixth in McCook. Aug. 8 through Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., for the FRC's "Second Chance" backpack giveaway. The FRC backpacks will include school supplies, as well as, new this year, socks and underwear provided in part by an IMPACT grant from Great Plains Communications.
