NORTH PLATTTE, Neb.-- Milo Burton Darling, 95, passed away Aug. 1, 2016, at Linden Court in North Platte.

Milo was born Oct. 2, 1920, to Floyd and Cora Tompkins Darling at the family farm home west of Danbury, Neb. He was the ninth child of 10. Milo grew up on the family farm and graduated from Danbury High School in 1938. There were no jobs, so he moved to Los Angeles in 1941 and worked for a bakery selling bread door to door.

He married Alice Marilyn Townley in August of 1941. They would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Aug. 11 of this year. In 1942, they moved back to the farm near Danbury.

Milo was called into the service in June of 1944 and reported to duty in Little Rock for basic training and then on to California. He left for the South Pacific on Dec. 20, 1944. Milo was a member of the 77th Infantry and spent several months aboard ships in the Philippines before landing in Okinawa in April, 1945. On May 7, 1945, Milo was wounded, sent to Guam and then on to Hawaii before returning home. He was discharged in March, 1946. After returning home and recovering from his injuries, Milo received the Purple Heart for his service to his country.

He and Marilyn had one son, Richard. Milo and Marilyn farmed near Danbury for many years. He also worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads. After retirement, they first moved to McCook and then to North Platte. While living in North Platte Milo volunteered many hours to RSVP, Habitat for Humanity, Farm Service Agency and the VA.

Milo is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his son, Richard (Sue) Darling of North Platte; granddaughters, Emily (Chris) Bessette, Winter Park, Fla., and Jessica (Riley) Hughes, North Platte; and great-grandsons, Ethan, Jack, Grey, Alexander and Lucas and great-granddaughter, Georgia; his sister, Lois of Green Valley, Ariz.; as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.

Milo was preceeded in death by his parents and eight siblings.

Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Memorial services for Milo will be Aug. 22, 2016, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte at 11 a.m. Cremation was chosen. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory.
