'Alway's Fiddlin' Around'
Brad Hershberger, owner of Hershberger Music Co. in McCook, delivers a papier mache sculpture of his father, Floyd Hershberger (Jan. 12, 1927--March 7, 2011), to the High Plains Museum in downtown McCook, Tuesday afternoon. The sculpture, called "Always Fiddlin' Around" and dated November 1992, now looks over the museum from the mezzanine music room. Floyd's wife, Joyce, said Floyd had seen Gilhausen's work in a cafe in Oberlin and posed for a sketch. Gilhausen created the almost life-size papier mache sculpture from that sketch, Joyce said. Floyd put the sculpture in the front window of his family's music store in the 200 block of West First, where passersby often thought the real Floyd was standing in the window. Joyce said Floyd played classical violin, but enjoyed having the fun and whimsical "Fiddlin' Around" sculpture in the store. "It is one-of-a-kind," Joyce said. The museum is open, free of charge, Tuesday through Saturday, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
