TRENTON, Neb. -- A 19-year-old Brule man died of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident south of the Swanson Reservoir and west of Highway 25 at 6:05 p.m., Wednesday.

A report by Nebraska State Patrol troopers Jeff Van Stelton and Neal Golden indicates that Zachery Schnabel died at Community Hospital of McCook after he was flown by a Great Plains Transport helicopter (from North Platte) from the accident scene at the intersection of county roads 360 and 706.

Schnabel was southbound in a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup on Road 360 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and the pickup entered the intersection and was struck on the passenger side doors by an eastbound Western Star truck driven on Road 706 by Matthew Liston, 53, of Kansas.

Schnabel was trapped inside the pickup and extricated by personnel from Trenton Fire and Rescue and the McCook Fire Department. Schnabel was not wearing a seatbelt, Liston was wearing one, according to troopers. Each man was alone in his vehicle.

Failure to stop at the stop sign and reduced visibility because of dust are being investigated as causes of the crash.

Schnabel's pickup was totaled. Liston's truck sustained damage to the front end.

The troopers were assisted on the site by Hitchcock County Sheriff's Department deputies Daugherty, Jones and King.
