OBERLIN, Kan. -- Violet Carolyn Brown, age 86, of Oberlin, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin.

She was born April 4, 1930, north of Oberlin to Kenneth and Charolette (Uehlin) VanPelt. She attended Decatur County High School and graduated with the class of 1948. She married Raye Brown on September 14, 1949. To this union 3 children were born; Jackie, Janie, & Kirk. Violet and Raye made their home at Oberlin and owned and operated Raye's Grocery. Raye passed away in 1977. She would then marry Elmer Kathka. They were married for 25 years and then divorced.

Violet was a member of the Oberlin United Methodist Church, Legion Auxiliary, and Oberlin Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed yard work and growing flowers, spending time and baking with her grandchildren.

Violet is survived by her daughters, Jackie & husband Willard Frickey of Kansas City, Missouri, Janie & husband Rich Beall of Denver, Colorado, and son Kirk Brown of Oberlin, Kansas. Brothers Dale VanPelt of Montrose, Colorado & Lee VanPelt of Cedaredge, Colorado, sister Charlene & husband Ron Weizbrod of Montrose, Colorado. 8 grandchildren: Trever (Todd Brezinka) Frickey, Tracy (Dave Galantine) Frickey, Brian (Michelle) Frickey, Brad (Stacy) Frickey, Matthew (Annette) Romero, Joshua (Melissa) Romero, Brandon (Lacy) Beall, Brian Beall, Jenny (Matt) Kasson, Ashley Brown, Greatgrandchildren; Blake, Chase, & Trey Hudson, Bernadette, Allie & Brady Frickey, Kyrsten, Camryn, & Jaren Frickey, Michael, Raye, & Dru Kasson, Noah & Katie Romero, Dominique & Josh Romero, Levi, Faith, & Brielle Beall

Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday, June 28, 2016 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Paul's Funeral Home, in Oberlin, Kansas. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Oberlin United Methodist Church in Oberlin with Revs. Gordon Pettibone and Tom Smith, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the playground equipment and water fountain in the Oberlin Park. Interment will be at the Oberlin Cemetery.

Paul's Funeral Home of Oberlin is in charge of services.
