Spring training

Monday, March 14, 2016

Ed Merritt's border collie "RJ" teaches youngster "Cinch" how to herd sheep, and "Red" learns just how high lambs can jump Saturday, during a monthly clinic hosted by the Stock Dog Club of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. Stock dog club advisor Judy Bowmaster owns 9-month-old Red; NCTA student David Johnson of O'Neill owns 1 1/2-year-old Cinch. Merritt, of Wellfleet, belongs to the Outback Stock Dog Association, whose members help at NCTA's dog clinics. Merritt said that training a dog to work with livestock involves teaching the dog manners, and "to do something the first time he's asked." The dog club invites cattle producers, stock dog handlers and the public to a demonstration by Juan Reyes of Wheatland, Wyoming, who teaches how to use livestock dogs in a low-stress, low-impact manner. Reyes' clinic is Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the indoor arena at NCTA. The clinic is free to the public with a freewill supper at 6 p.m. at the Everett Stencel Livestock Teaching Center on campus. No RSVP is needed.
