Gary Dean Orr, Sr.

OBERLIN, Kan. -- Gary Dean Orr, Sr. was born Sept. 8, 1939, at the family farm near Kanona, Kansas, to Dean and Myrtle (Spiers) Orr. He passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 76.

Gary was the youngest of five children and grew to manhood on the family farm northwest of Kanona. He went to grade school in Kanona and graduated from Decatur Community High School in Oberlin with the Class of 1958. He served in U.S. Navy from 1961-1966 as a machinery repairman on the aircraft carriers USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 and USS Kitty Hawk CVA-63. They were home ported in San Diego but cruised much of the Pacific, including some combat time off the coast of Vietnam. While in California, he bought his first Corvette. After his military service, Gary returned to the Orr homestead in the Altory township, the third generation of his family to live there. He loved animals and farming. He was a pioneer of no-till farming in Decatur County.

Gary and his first wife, Linda Wade, were married April 1, 1971, and later divorced in 1981. They became the parents of two sons, Gary Dean Jr., and Jade. Gary was proud to have his oldest son, Gary Jr., join him farming as the fourth generation.

On June 14, 1983, Gary was united in marriage to Sarah Fulk at the Faith Lutheran Church in Oberlin. They made their home on the Orr family farm and two more children joined the family, Elisabeth and David.

Gary was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Bon Homme Richard Shipmates Association, Mini Sappa Antique Club, Great Plains Corvette Club, Lions Club International, and belonged to American Legion Post No. 70. In addition, he was a former board member and president of the Decatur Coop Association in Oberlin. Gary was excellent at building many things and a favorite hobby of his was restoring Allis Chalmers tractors. Gary also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; four children, Gary Orr, Jr., and wife, Tracy, of rural Oberlin, Jade Orr and wife, Ayumi, of Sherwood, Arkansas, Elisabeth Orr of rural Oberlin and David Orr of McCook, Nebraska; two sisters, Jennie Canfield, of Grinnell, Iowa, and Myra Canfield, of Niles, Michigan; two granddaughters, Shakira Cook and Jessica Orr; three step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger Orr, sister, Effie Gish; three brothers-in-law, Ralph Canfield, Forrest Canfield and Ellis Gish; and one sister-in-law, Veanna Orr Carman.

Funeral services are Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Oberlin with Pastor Shelly Holle officiating. Burial will be in the Kanona Cemetery with military rites by Oberlin American Legion Post No. 70 and Oberlin Legion Riders. Memorial contributions may be given in Gary's memory to the Mini Sappa Antique Club and sent to Pauls Funeral Home, 121 N. Penn Ave., Oberlin, KS 67749 (
