Not so Merry Christmas for car, arrestee with missing glasses

McCOOK, Neb. -- A pair of unrelated claims for damages have been filed against the City of McCook after a Christmas decoration was blown from a light post and an arrested man was unable to find his eyeglasses. The McCook City Council will receive and file both claims tonight during a regularly scheduled meeting, 6:30 p.m., at city offices.

A Christmas tree shaped decoration was blown from its mounting onto a 2014 Buick Enclave owned by Wagner Chevrolet Buick in early December, according to one claim. The claim seeks $4,089 for repairs to the $35,000 vehicle.

A Webb Body Shop estimate for repairs indicates the vehicle's windshield was broken and roof was damaged. The vehicle's exterior also requires paint and replacement of rear door moldings, among other items.

A second claim for damages from a McCook man seeks $300 compensation to replace a pair of prescription eyeglasses missing since his arrest in November. The man, 33-year-old Daryl Banzet, indicates in the claim he was arrested on Nov. 26 and when he got to jail the eyeglasses were gone, "and have not been seen since."

The claim includes a handwritten annotation from a second individual, just below Banzet's writing, indicating Banzet did not have glasses on him when he exited a patrol car. "In reviewing video, Mr. Banzet did not have glasses on when he exited the patrol car and never had them here at the jail," it states.

City Council members typically forward claims for damages to the city's insurance carrier without public comment.
