Highway project planned

McCOOK, Neb. -- The Nebraska Department of Roads is planning a $10.8 million road improvement project beginning at McCook and spanning roughly 11 miles through Indianola.

The project includes resurfacing the roadway and replacing two bridge structures along U.S. Highway 6/34. It is tentatively scheduled to begin during the fall of 2016 and estimated to be completed by the fall of 2017, according to information presented to the Red Willow County Commissioners Monday morning.

Temporary roads and shoulder widening will be used to accommodate traffic during the reconstruction of the two bridge structures, located over Coon Creek and River Canyon.

The project is also anticipated to impact the Indianola City Park due to the proposed acquisition of new right-of-way and temporary easements from the park. The right-of-way would be used for the construction of ADA compliant curb ramps and would not interfere with the amenities of the park, however.

Funding for the project will be derived from federal and state funding sources, according to NDOR.

Roads officials are seeking public input on the project during a comment period running through Jan. 11, 2016. Additional information is available on the NDOR website or by contacting the District 7 office at 308-345-8490.
