Volunteers and the truck driver wore shorts for the Hitchcock County Pantry's first "Mobile Pantry," in Culbertson in August. That probably won't be the attire for the second Mobile Pantry, Saturday, Dec. 12, at the VM Hall in Stratton. (Connie Jo Discoe/McCook Gazette)

STRATTON, Neb. -- The Hitchcock County, Nebraska, Pantry plans its second "Mobile Pantry," Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until noon, at the VM Hall in downtown Stratton.

The first Mobile Pantry was in August in Culbertson. The need was obvious, coordinators discovered, as volunteers distributed 3,712 pounds of food to 75 households (approximately 420 individuals) in about 1 1/2 hours.

The one-day Mobile Pantry in Stratton will be open to Hitchcock County residents. There are no income restrictions and there is no charge.

Hitchcock County Pantry treasurer JoLyn Hare said that Hitchcock County Pantry board members requested the Mobile Pantry from the FoodBank for the Heartland, in Kearney, for the distribution in Culbertson and now the second distribution in Stratton, to help the local Pantry help families in need.

According to the FoodBank, the goal of its Mobile Pantry program is to provide food where there is a high need, but limited resources.

The VM Hall is located on Stratton's main street, at 502 Bailey. Participants must bring their own large boxes, bags and/or laundry baskets.

The Mobile Pantry is co-sponsored by the Hitchcock County Pantry and the Foodbank for the Heartland.
