Basking in the KC Royals glow

Monday, November 2, 2015

Those of us in mid-America take great pride today as we join in celebrating the Kansas City Royals' thrilling victory in the 2015 World Series of Baseball.

Making the victory especially sweet was the fact that the Royals clinched the title in New York -- the most populated city in the United States.

The "Big Apple" does a lot of boasting about its accomplishments, but -- from time to time -- it's fun to remind them that the "Little Apple" --Manhattan, Kansas -- and the neighboring towns in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska -- including McCook -- take pride in our accomplishments, too.

Luckily, for us in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas, KBRL radio of McCook chose to broadcast Royals' games this season. It's been an exciting year for those of us who are loyal listeners. Adding to our pleasure is the fact that one of the Royals' stars is Alex Gordon, a Lincoln native who played for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers' baseball team before being drafted and becoming a Golden Gloves' left fielder and a clutch hitter for the Kansas City Royals.

In days to come, you will probably see quite a few folks wearing blue caps with the letters, KC, etched on the front. We may live 400 miles west of Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, but many of us still salute the Royals for their outstanding accomplishment.
