The Sports Shoppe in downtown McCook, Nebraska, remains open, through its back door in the alley, while its facade undergoes renovation. Bob Elder said that Darren Morgan's crew from Morgan Construction and Inspection Service will align the now-inset front door with the sidewalk and install new and bigger display windows and new lighting. A new stone overlay and new bronze coloring and canopy will replace the blond-colored bricks and silver awning and trim that has graced the front of the building since the Sports Shoppe opened in 1988. The store, at 208 Norris Avenue, was formerly Pate Hardware. During the unveiling of the reno project scheduled before McCook's Heritage Days celebration (the last weekend of the month), the store's new name will also be revealed -- "The Sports Shoppe and Big Red Etc." Elder said that the North Platte Sports Shoppe has used that name for maybe 15 years. "We've always carried the same merchandise," Elder said, adding with a grin, "We can't use that 'Big Red' name in our Colby (Kansas) store, but we can here in McCook." During the renovation, off-street parking is available in parking lots on the west side of the alley behind the store.
