OBERLIN, Kan. -- An apple a day can help keep aches and pains away. Find out how small changes in your diet can add up to big health benefits during a free nutrition program on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at the Golden Age Center in Oberlin, from 3 to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The nutrition presentation is part of a monthly health and wellness series at the Golden Age Center. The programs are presented via interactive televideo (ITV) through Decatur Health System's (DHS) membership in the Midwest Cancer Alliance (MCA), the outreach division of The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Melinda Pine, RD, CSO, LMT, will facilitate the program. Pine, a registered dietitian who specializes in helping people improve health through balanced diets and better food choices, is part of a team of health program experts available through Turning Point: The Center for Hope & Healing.

"A few minor changes in your meals can help you boost your energy or even lose some weight," explains Mitch Olson, Manager of Dietary Services at DHS.

The Center for Disease Control research shows that a poor diet can result in lethargy and increase the risk of diabetes and some cancers. However, according to the World Health Organization, a diet high in vegetables, fruits and plant-based proteins can actually protect the human body against these same health problems.

"Anyone looking for a fairly easy way to improve their overall health can benefit from a program like this," says Brooke Groneman, Director of Outreach for MCA.
