Show pigs

Kaylie Lotspeich shows "Tucker" in the Chase County Fair hog show junior showmanship class Wednesday morning in Imperial. Visiting with Judge Brad Bennett, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln livestock judge coach, during showmanship was Tristan Ferguson. After 10 classes of market hogs and praising the quality of animals and especially that of showmen in Chase County, Bennett seized an opportunity to vent two personal pet peeves -- foot-long show sticks and under- and over-weight show pigs. Bennett said, "Foot-long hog bats don't get the job done. You drive (a hog) from the head. Short hog bats just don't cut it." Of 150- and 350-pound show pigs, he said, "There is nothing acceptable about bringing a 150-pound and a 350-pound hog to a show." Bennett said 4-H'ers and those adults helping them with their projects need to keep very close track of the weight and feed consumption of their show animals. Bennett said he can accept 280-290 pounds show hogs, but "three-hundred-fifty is flat-out too big. It's too far out-of-bounds."
