Slightly more students opt out than opt in

McCOOK, Neb. -- More students are optioning out of the McCook School District than coming in, but not by much.

Ninety-three students from surrounding school districts are optioning into McCook Schools, five added just this week, with 107 students optioning out.

Those numbers change throughout the year, said McCook School Superintendent Grant Norgaard at the regular Board of Education meeting Monday, where the board approved the annual 2015-16 Option Enrollment Resolution. The resolution identifies each year the number of students who can option in from other school districts for each grade. That number is derived by subtracting the capacity of each grade or special education program, from projected enrolled students. For this year, there is room in each grade for option students, except for several special education programs at the high school, junior high, Central Elementary and McCook Elementary.

At the high school, 40 option students can be allowed in the ninth and 12th grade, 20 for 11th grade and 25 for tenth grade. Grade capacity for all grades at the high school is 150 students each, with projected enrollment for 12th grade at 110; 11th grade, 130; 10th grade, 125 and ninth grade, 110.

For the junior high, all grades have the capacity for 140 students, with projected enrollment in the eighth grade at 95; seventh grade, 110 and sixth grade, 105.

Central Elementary grade capacity for each grade is 120, with projected enrollment of fifth grade at 110 and fourth grade, 85. Grade capacity for McCook Elementary is 120 for each grade, with projected enrollment for third grade at 100; second grade, 105; third grade, 110 and kindergarten, 105.

  • We need new jobs in the community to help keep our enrollment up. If WEC were to expand that would be new jobs, more kids, expanded tax base, more sales....contact your elected state senator, and Governor to urge expansion.
