Nine-year-old third grader Zachary Shapley of Imperial, Nebraska, peers into the new backpack he received at the annual Salvation Army backpack give-away at McCook Christian Church in McCook Tuesday afternoon. Little sister Annalee will be a new kindergartner this year. They're the children of Alisha and Roy Shapley. Waiting to make her backpack selection, Southwest Elementary fourth grader Brianna Rae, the daughter of Carl and Tina Rae of Danbury, read to 2 1/2-year-old Evylynn Weaver, the daughter of Tai-lynn Weaver, also of Danbury. Backpack project coordinator Barb Ostrum said she and her volunteers gave away 140-or-so backpacks stuffed with school supplies. "It went well, in spite of the rain," she said. Barb said she knows the storms and heavy rain kept some families away, but there are still some backpacks available, at the church at 507 West B between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Or give Barb a call, (308) 345-1187, during the same hours.
