Descendants of the original parishioners of the historic Stone Church, eight miles south of Culbertson, Nebraska, on Highway 17, plan their annual clean-up day Saturday, May 16, starting at 10 a.m. The church association's annual meeting will be Sunday, May 24, at 6 p.m. Hitchcock County pioneers organized a Methodist Protestant congregation in a sod church in 1892, and built the stone church -- by hand using stone quarried five miles southwest of the church -- in 1900. In 1904, St. Paul Methodist Protestant Church merged with United Brethren in Christ and in 1907, the group organized as United Brethren. Regular church services discontinued at the Stone Church in 1951. In 1975, the Stone Church Community Association dedicated itself to the restoration and preservation of the Stone Church as a memorial to their pioneer ancestors.
