'Appreciate McCook' tour

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

At the Museum of the High Plains on Thursday, May 7, McCook Junior High seventh graders Eric Vasquez, from left, Colton Craig and A. J. Johnson study the uniform of Lt. Col. Vincent P. Wasia, who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 until 1988. They and other junior high students toured McCook on the first-ever "McCook Appreciation Tour," hosted by the local Home Town Competitiveness Initiative and Youth Change Reaction. The national HTC Initiative integrates youth engagement, entrepreneur-focused economic development, leadership development and community-focused philanthropy in a framework for rural community revitalization and growth. The idea of the day was to give students a positive image of McCook's history, its present and its future -- and to plant a seed in students' minds and hearts about staying in or returning to McCook as they write their own futures after school. McCook National Bank, chief financial officer Tom Bredvick, right, explained how the bank encourages its employees to serve their community, and to recognize the accomplishments of those in the communities the bank serves. At the Museum of the High Plains students learned about the rich railroad, agriculture and oil history of the McCook area, and realized that many have protected them as they grow and determine their own futures. Students also toured the Sen. George W. Norris House Historical Site, the Keystone Business Center, Sehnert's Bakery and Bierock Cafe and the Historic Fox Theatre.
