Veteran couple to speak at Armed Forces Day

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Cambridge, Nebraska, U.S. Army veterans Desiree and Calvin Wineland are scheduling Cambridge's fourth annual Armed Forces Day veterans recognition and barbecue Saturday, May 16.

The Winelands' invitation reads: "Everyone is invited to come and honor our veterans. And if you don't have one, come and adopt one!"

Veterans/golfers will team up at the Cambridge Cross Creek Golf Course for golf and camaraderie at 9 a.m.

At the Cambridge Community Center in downtown Cambridge, the "Meet and Greet" begins at 4 p.m., followed by the chow bell at 5 p.m. A traditional cake-cutting ceremony will take place at 7 p.m.

The Cambridge American Legion Auxiliary and John's Garage and friends have volunteered to set up, cook and serve.

Attending this year again and arriving by bus and motorcycle are Nebraska veterans from across the state and the Lincoln Legionnaire Riders from Lincoln. A large American flag will arrive, carried by Sgt. 1st Class Jim Flemming, from A Co., 4-159th, Fort Lewis, Washington, and his wife, Roselyn.

Rick Herst of Indianola and John and Karen Werkmeister of Cambridge will coordinate the annual Armed Forces Day Poker Run, whose riders will visit veterans at the Veterans Home in Grand Island and then link up with the Lincoln bus and riders and escort them into Cambridge.
