Council meeting time to change?

McCOOK, Neb. -- The McCook City Council is eyeing a possible change to the 7:30 p.m. meeting time of regularly scheduled meetings.

City staff indicate they have been asked to review the current meeting time and whether an adjustment in times should be made. Agenda details for the item do not provide any clues as to what times are being considered in place of the 7:30 p.m. start time.

Councilors will discuss the item Monday evening during a regularly scheduled meeting at the Municipal Center.

Other items on Monday's regular and consent agenda;

* A resolution approving the agency agreement between the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics and McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport pertaining to the construction of a new 8-plex hangar will be considered for approval. The new hangar would replace five deteriorating hangars with a new 6- or 8-plex hangar. The 6-plex option is being considered in the event bids for the 8-plex come in higher than anticipated, according to the meeting agenda.

The City of McCook will be responsible for 10 percent of the estimated $700,000 project. Insurance monies paid out to other airport facilities, stemming from a 2011 hail storm, are slated to be used to cover the city's portion of the hangar project.

* McCook Community College has requested permission to occupy city right-of-way for the development of off-street parking on the east side of East First Street, between East L Street and East M Street. The parking is intended to alleviate some of the parking congestion near the Brooks Hall dormitory.

* A resolution authorizing the annual waiver request from the McCook Housing Agency, waiving payment in lieu of taxes, will be considered for approval.

* Plans and specifications relating to 2015 armor coating maintenance of city streets will be considered for approval.

* Councilors will consider proclamations declaring April 6-10, 2015, as Public Transit Week; April 12-18, 2015, as National Public Safety Telecommunicator's Week; and the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

  • Good deal on the airport hangers but you can bet some will complain about the grant and point to the over half a million grant dollars as an increase in the budget.

  • Obviously dennis you are very big supporter to the whole federal and state grant processes to pay for the needs of the City of McCook. That is your right and McCook under your past leadership has become very use to this revenue to take care of things. One question then. Have you taken the time to look at the federal budget deficit total since this country was founded? It is over 18 trillion just in budget deficits not to mention all of the unfunded liabilities such as social security, pensions and medicare. That is the part which really is concerning to me when you brag about getting a grant from other institutions that are spending way too much money they don't have either. It seems you support handing our money over to the government and then begging to get it back in the form of a grant. I don't agree with it and this whole notion that if we don't take it someone else will is wrong and absent of any leadership. This area seems to be quite good at getting these grants with people like yourself and Rex at the MEDC but how has that translated into a better standard of living? Just recently Red Willow county in a publication was identified as one of the poorest counties in Nebraska. I don't really see how all of your big plans to have the government the largest part of this economy will really change anything and in fact it appears that those ideas are making things worse. You want WEC to double in size, more government. You want to have construction and housing done with more government subsidized entities, more government. This is a pattern and yes I am pointing this out specifically at you as an individual because this whole group think thing you hide behind doesn't solve problems. Individuals make decisions and like you supporting the overall increase growth of government, I take issue with that. I don't see you as one that believes in a limited government.

    I know that this post will be branded an attack but it is simply stating an opinion about the situation southwest Nebraska finds itself in under this mindset that the if the government is doing well then everyone is doing well.
