Doris was born Aug. 3, 1924, on a ranch in Dundy County, Nebraska. She graduated from high school in Imperial, Nebraska, where she was a salutatorian and received a Regent Scholarship. She attended the University of Nebraska for one semester, before beginning teaching at a small rural Nebraska school. She went from teaching to accounting in 1943, and worked in that field until 1953, when she married Don Baney. That same year, she went back to teaching and taught for six years until she and Don adopted their daughter, Denise. In 1961, her husband and daughter died in an automobile accident and she went back to work as a teacher for two years until 1963. At that time she began working as an accountant at the Frenchman Valley Co-op. Through friends in Colorado, she met her second husband, Judge Donald Carpenter. She married Donald in 1965 and became the stepmother to his two sons. She returned to school at the University of Northern Colorado in 1967 and graduated with a degree in accounting in 1971. She earned her CPA license in 1973 and started her own accounting firm as one of two licensed CPA's in Greeley. She had her own practice from 1973 until 1997, when she sold the business and retired. One of her largest accomplishments was her farm and ranch operation in Chase and Dundy County, Nebraska, in which she managed several family ranches and farms through the course of her life.
