Huddled masses

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Dear Editor,

Words from "The New Colossus," a poem written by Emma Lazarus, are inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free" is a famous quote from it.

What would Emma Lazarus advise us to do about the little children, teenagers and adults who are illegal immigrants from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala? Overwhelming numbers of them have placed a huge financial burden on our country.

Southwest Nebraska is not safe from the effects of this problem.

Many of them have scabies and an antibiotic-resistant type of T.B.

They need food, clothing and housing. Temporarily, they are being sent to various army camps.

Critics say that America is not a dumping ground for victims of human trafficking.

Historically, our nation has been a supporter of Judeo-Christian values and compassion.

Sending them back to Central America is very costly. Yet, a number of officials have suggested that we do that and donate money to help them.

Rick Perry, governor of Texas, has placed law enforcement along the border that his state shares with Mexico. He said that stationing the National Guard there is a much better solution, but not a perfect one.

  • I, like many, am so sorry for all those children-- and adults-- entering the USA illegally to find a better life. Yet our country is already in debt by trillions of dollars that our children and grand children will need to pay. Even here in McCook we have lines of people needing the food pantry, government welfare payments, food stamps, clothing, housing and utility help. Compassion and reality meet at the border. God help us all.

  • "Compassion and reality meet at the border" and show us who are the real Christians and who are the people just going to church.
