Friends and family gather around Bill Elliott, seated right, at a pancake benefit and silent auction Thursday evening. Elliott, of rural McCook, Nebraska, is Red Willow County's weed control superintendent and household hazardous waste collection program director and the Red Willow Western Rural Fire District's fire chief. He is suffering from ulcerative colitis and complications and side effects of its treatment. Among the pancake flippers were Bill Patras, Red Willow Western firefighter, left, and Dan Hartwell, City of McCook firefighter. RWW firefighters John Clark placed a bid on a silent auction item. Among those who attended the benefit and visited with Elliott were other fellow RWW firefighters John Clesson, left, and Mike Allen. Bill laughed and tipped his ball cap, "I even wore my 'Grumpy' hat!," in tribute to his daughter's playful description of him last week as "old and grumpy." Billie Cole, Bill's daughter, was touched by the great turnout for her dad's benefit. "He's tired this morning," Billie said this morning, but he's happy that he had a chance to see and visit with so many people. Those wanting to help with Bill's medical and travel expenses can mail donations to the Red Willow Western Rural Fire Department, c/o Benefit Supper, P.O. Box 463, McCook, NE 69001. Get well cards will reach Bill at 38204 Road 713, McCook, NE 69001.
