John Allen 'Jack' Barnes

June 3, 1937 - May 24, 2014

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- John Allen "Jack" Barnes, age 76, of Cambridge, died at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

He was born in Minden on June 3, 1937, to Kenneth and Margaret (Hawe) Bames, Jack's family moved to Ravenna where he graduated from high school. Jack then joined the U,S, Navy, serving 20 years before retiring. He was stationed on the USS Hornet and the USS Kittyhawk aircraft carriers. He served two tours in Viet Nam. He was stationed in Guam for three years.

Jack retired in Alameda, California, where he continued as a civilian employee for the Navy and later in Layton, Utah, as a munitions specialist, He repaired weapon systems on aircraft and helicopters. Jack retumed to school in Nebraska in 1982 to Southeast Community College in Lincoln, where he earned an Associate Degree as a machinist.

Jack moved to Cambridge to be close to family in 2002. He worked for his brother, Dick, at the Town Talk Restaurant. He enjoyed golf, cards, bowling, crossword puzzles and Sudoku.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, David Cox.

He is survived by his two sisters, Marietta Cox of New Ulm, Minnesota, and Karron and husband, Richard Deems of Broomfield, Colorado; two brothers, Robert and wife, Sandy Bones of South Heart, North Dakota, and Richard and wife, Jennifer Bames of Cambridge; Nieces and nephews, Steve, Susan, Patrick, Stephanie, Kevin, Nicole, Robert and John.

Memorial Mass will be recited in Cambridge on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Mark Sieker officiating. Inurnment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Cambridge. Military honors will be graveside by the Cambridge American Legion and the US Navy Honors Detail.
