Legislation could put 'good' back in 'good time'

Monday, March 10, 2014

McCOOK, Nebraska -- State legislators have introduced several bills this session in an effort to attach requirements to inmates earning good time, which reduces their state prison sentence by half.

LB 832 would require violent offenders earn their good time sentence reduction through participation in a program plan and actual good behavior.

LB 907 would add legislation that takes away an offenders ability to earn good time on convictions for offenses committed while incarcerated, it would not affect their ability to earn good time on their current sentence. LB 907 would also take away inmates current ability to earn good time for time spent while in segregation.

Legislators have already introduced and adopted a resolution this session, LR 424, which appoints a special committee to study the circumstances of the release of Nikko Jenkins and subsequent homicides he committed.

According to the resolution Jenkins not only was released early from prison due to good time provisions, but had also made multiple unsuccessful attempts to receive mental health treatment while incarcerated.
