Ear flappers and dead batteries

Terry Sides of Tri-State Towing, McCook, Nebraska, steps into the diesel tow truck that he let warm up for at least 15 minutes about 8:30 this morning -- when the temperature chilled out at -9 degrees. "It's colder-n-crap this morning," Terry said, grinning and adjusting his furry winter hat complete with fur-lined ear flaps. "We've had about six calls already this morning -- dead batteries. This is hard on batteries." Many Southwest Nebraska schools started late this morning because of the extreme low temps and wind chill, allowing school kids and buses a chance to warm up before venturing outside. The deep freeze won't last long, however, as forecasters predict highs climbing to the 50s by Saturday.
