McCOOK, Nebraska -- The McCook Gazette's 2014 New Year's Baby doesn't mess around: she arrived nearly two weeks earlier than expected.

Acacia Marie Frank, daughter of Nathaniel and Sara Frank of McCook, arrived at 8:36 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, at Community Hospital in McCook, with Dr. Lori Reese as the attending physician.

Acacia, named for the type of wood used in the temple in Jerusalem, is the fourth child of the Franks' and their first daughter.

The 6 pound, 9.4 ounce baby, who measured 19 and 3/4 inches long, was scheduled to arrive Jan. 14 by cesarean section, but Acacia (pronounced A-kay-sha), had other plans. Mom went into labor on New Years Day Jan. 1 and Acacia was born the following day.

Nathaniel and Sara had nothing but praise for the staff at Community Hospital.

"The surgical staff, the nurses, everyone was phenomenal," Nathaniel said. "We hadn't been there since the remodeling and it was like a brand new hospital."

Her parents, and especially her three older brothers, are thrilled with the newest member of the family.

"They adore her," Sara said of sons Jonathan, 8, Aaron, 6 and Psalm, 4. "Jonathan told me, 'I feel like I can't stop looking at her, all I want to do is hold her.'"

"The only way we can keep them away for a few minutes is to let them play Legos upstairs," Nathanial said.

The affection the boys have for their little sister is evident, as they constantly gaze at her in Mom's lap, laying a hand nearby or as close to Acacia as possible.

With Acacia the first girl in the family, Nathanial and Sara are preparing themselves for lots of help.

"Her brothers are going to be pretty protective -- she probably won't have her first date until she's 25," Nathanial joked. "Or, she'll have three chaperones on her dates," Sara added.

As the McCook Gazette 2014 baby, Acacia and her family will receive gifts from participating businesses, including from: McCook Gazette; Coppermill Steakhouse; U-Save Pharmacy and Medical Supply; McCook Clinic PC; Cambridge Hospital; the Loop; Walmart; McCook National Bank; Community Hospital in McCook.

The Gazette area's first baby of 2014 contest begins one second past midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. The new baby must be born within the Gazette trade area of Dundy, Chase, Hayes, Hitchcock, Frontier, Red Willow and Furnas counties in Nebraska, and Rawlins and Decatur counties in Kansas, to parents who live within the same area.
