Search is on for first baby of 2014

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The search is on for the first baby born in 2014 in the McCook Gazette trade area.

The newest miss or mister will be the winner of the annual title and gift certificates from Gazette-area businesses.

The search for the Gazette area's first baby of 2014 begins one second past midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.

The new baby must be born within the Gazette trade area of Dundy, Chase, Hayes, Hitchcock, Frontier, Red Willow and Furnas counties in Nebraska, and Rawlins and Decatur counties in Kansas, to parents who live within the same area.

Parents or grandparents, or proud aunts and uncles, cousins -- some relative -- MUST contact the Gazette with information regarding the new baby's arrival. Hospitals WILL NOT and DO NOT release this information.

The Gazette needs the baby's name; date and time (be very specific) of the baby's birth; his/her parents' names, address and contact numbers; and the hospital and attending doctor's name. The time of birth will be certified with the doctor.

The contest continues on a day-to-day basis until the newest baby makes his or her appearance, and relatives contact the Gazette.

Parents should not assume that just because their new one wasn't born on Jan. 1 that he/she is not the first baby born in the new year in the area -- contact the Gazette to find out for sure. The latest "First Baby" winner was Jacelyn Josephine Baker, born on Jan. 7, 2012. She is daughter of Lacey White and Steve Baker of Champion. She was delivered by Dr. Jose Garcia at 3:46 a.m. MT, Jan. 7, 2012, at Chase County Hospital in Imperial.

Other late arrivals were born on Jan. 4 -- Erica Dawn Quinn, born in 1986; Nicholas Eugene Lepper, born in 1999; and Chloe Marie Weber, born in 2009.

If there is a tie, the names of the babies will be put into a hat and a winner will be drawn. There will be only one winner.
