19-plus gallons of blood

Thursday, October 31, 2013

McCook, Nebraska, Red Cross Blood Mobile coordinator Cathy Carman presents Del Harsh of Cambridge with a certificate and a pin for donating 19 gallons of blood to the Red Cross. Harsh said, "That's 19 on the record ... that's just since they started the card system. I gave three times in two months once, but they caught me," he grinned. Harsh said he started giving blood as a college student in 1953, when he collected $10 each time he gave blood at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln. "That ten dollars was enough for two weekend dates," he chuckled. Del said giving blood "is a good thing to do," and recommends it to others, just maybe not to everyone. He explained, with a grin, "I brought Doug (his son) and my hired man once and both of them fainted and never came back."
