Sylvia Jane Coppin

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Sylvia Jane Coppin, age 93, passed away Oct. 10, 2013, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born May 3, 1920, on the family farm near Culbertson to Charlie and Mae (Wilson) Barger.

On May 15, 1959 she married Robert L. Coppin at the First Christian Church in McCook.

The couple owned and operated a gift shop in Central City, Colorado, for several years before moving to Denver, Colorado, where Sylvia worked as a saleslady in the May D&F Department Store for over five years. In September of 1969, they bought and operated The Prospector Gift Shop, Art Gallery and coffee Shop for 10 years in Black Hawk, Colorado.

In 1979, they retired and moved to Culbertson. She worked for McCook Townhouse, Hinky Dinky in McCook, and the H & RW Irrigation Office in Culbertson.

Sylvia was a member McCook Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary No. 133, V.F.W. Auxiliary No. 6219, McCook Art Guild and the Culbertson Women's Club. She was also a past member of the Genesee Grange on Lookout Mountain, Colorado.

She was a past president of Ladies Missionary at McCook Christian Church, McCook Art Guild and the V.F.W. Auxiliary No. 6219 in Culbertson.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, on Sept. 21, 1992; two brothers, Roy and Dale Barger; three sisters, Ruth Williams, Elsie Shull and Alma Beck; a nephew, Charlie Shull; a niece, Phyllis Williams; a great niece, Debbie Kiel; and one sister-in-law, Delores Barger Thompson.

Survivors include nine nieces and nephews, Harlan Williams and wife, Gail of Trenton, Marilyn Matson of McCook, Linda Bahl of Hayes, Kansas, Judy Rohr and husband, Jim from Ransom, Kansas, Vonda Brunswick and husband, Manny of Kearney, Ronald Barger and wife, Connie of Culbertson, Sue Blomstedt and husband, Jim of Wellfleet, John Barger and wife, Sharon of Lubbock, Texas, Jeanne Barger of North Platte, Nebraska; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name to McCook Christian Church.

Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.
