  • A huge reason that the Republican River Basin irrigation districts must work together to benefit them all and to save the aquifer for future generations.

  • Water in the Republican River as well as the aquifer does not come from annual rainfall at McCook Ben Nelson Regional. If it did, stream flow and aquifer levels would be increasing as our average rainfall has increased over the last century. It may not seem that way if you consider only a handful of years rather than a long term average. My point is that the NRD and DNR are working together to establish a future monopoly of power over all stream flow and aquifer use. If you would like to consider the political power the western half of the state has in comparison to its water use to the same power and water use of the eastern half of the state, one might begin to grasp the purpose of recent political actions involving our water resources. Similar activities are taking place in western states such as Nevada and California where hundred billion dollar projects are being implemented to divert water away from non-relevant agricultural areas to more politically influential suburban areas. Pitting the urban against the rural is one of the oldest political tactics ever used in our country.
