Civil defense sirens need attention soon

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Maintenance issues with the McCook civil defense warning sirens have prompted Fire Chief Marc Harpham to request an additional $8,000 in the upcoming budget. During the city of McCook 2013-14 budget presentation, Monday evening, Harpham reiterated the critical nature of the service and said he had growing concerns that maintenance practices may need to be improved.

Harpham said city staff have historically served as troubleshooters for the warning sirens when issues arose, and hired out local electricians to assist when necessary.

Harpham said the additional funds will be utilized to send a city employee through training to become certified on repairing the warning sirens.
