Hinze Chiropractic Care Goal Is to Empower Patients

Dr. Todd Hinze opened his chiropractic office in McCook in 2001

During his senior year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Todd Hinze was inspired to choose chiropractic care as his career. "What attracted me was the opportunity to help people without reliance on drugs and surgery," he said.

It was a life-changing decision for Todd, who pursued his chosen profession by enrolling at Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from the chiropractic college in September of 2001, and three months later -- in December of 2001 -- opened his chiropractic office in McCook.

In the dozen years since then, Dr. Hinze has been gratified by interaction with patients from a wide area and many walks of life.

"In all that we do, our goal is to empower patients to take charge of their lives," Dr. Hinze said.

The process starts with the patient's first visit. "We invite anyone wishing to know more about chiropractic care to set up an introductory appointment," said Dr. Hinze's wife, Lori, who serves as office manager and Dr. Hinze's assistant. If chiropractic care is not necessary, there is no charge for that appointment.

When chiropractic care is prescribed, Dr. Hinze's emphasis is on a gentle, caring approach. "If there's a lot of pain, we begin with instrument-assisted adjustments, doing controlled tapping to begin the pain relief process," he explained.

The focus in chiropractic care is the spine. When the spine is misaligned, a condition develops which chiropractors describe as subluxation. What that means is that the vertebrae are impinging on nerves, causing pain.

By doing adjustments -- manually or with instrument assistance -- chiropractors work to get the spine back in balance, easing the patient's discomfort in the process.

All ages are served by chiropractic care, not only for pain relief but for general health quality as well. "I have served children as young as three weeks of age and senior citizens approaching their 100th birthdays," Dr. Hinze says.

"One of the side benefits, and one of the things that brings great satisfaction, is that chiropractic adjustments can lead to improvements in the patient's general health," he said. Examples of this include the reduction of colicky conditions in babies and the easing of symptoms among adult allergy sufferers.

For the relief of pain, Dr. Hinze utilizes ultrasound, impulse adjusting instruments and a traction table specially designed to treat different parts of the body. Dr. Hinze is also trained in acupuncture, using the procedure as part of a total approach to pain relief.

"Education is a major part of what we do," Dr. Hinze said. "We help people understand the benefit of eating well and exercise," he said. Of particular importance is an active lifestyle, which Dr. Hinze promotes as a dedicated runner and marathon participant. He runs regularly and has participated in six marathons, which are 26.2-mile tests of endurance. He has participated in Chicago, Lincoln, Omaha, Tulsa, Colorado Springs and Abilene, Kan., and supports local running events as well.

Dr. Hinze comes from a family dedicated to health care. His father, Dr. Steven Hinze, is an oral surgeon, and Todd's brothers and sister, Robert, Monte and Michelle, are also health care professionals. Michelle, a podiatrist, and Monte, a chiropractor, are based in Omaha, while Todd and Rob, a podiatrist, have joined their father in the health care clinic in McCook.

The Hinze Medical Building, which opened in May of 2004, is located at 306 West D Street. In addition to the Hinze Chiropractic Office, the office houses the Great Plains Oral Surgery and Implant Center, operated by Todd's father, Dr. Steven R. Hinze, and High Plains Podiatry, operated by Todd's brother, Robert.

The Hinze Chiropractic office is open five days a week. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays during the summer and noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays when school is in session.

Since coming to McCook, the Hinzes have become active participants in community life. Todd is a member of the Sertoma Club and Lori is active in Rotary. In addition to running, Todd enjoys hunting and fishing and assists with Little League coaching. Lori has a strong interest in writing, with three manuscripts in progress and a number of short stories completed.

Lori Hinze is office manager for the clinic. The Hinzes have three boys, Steven, 14; Malcolm, 10; and Isaac, 9.

Todd and Lori are the parents of three sons: Steven, 14; Malcolm, who will turn 11 soon, and Isaac, 9. The Hinzes are members of the United Methodist Church.

"This is a wonderful place to live and work," Dr. Hinze said. "Lori and I and other members of the chiropractic profession are here to serve you. We are strong advocates of chiropractic care and look forward to assisting residents of this region with their health care needs."

As part of the Hinze Chiropractic Office's commitment to service, Lori is available to answer questions about cost and insurance coverage. The Hinze office participates in Medicare and Medicaid programs and is a member of the Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Coventry and Midlands Choice networks.
