McCOOK, Nebraska -- The Hair Inn, or "The Little Yellow House," in McCook is under new ownership.

After long-time owner Ken Allen moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, Lauren Unger, a stylist at the Hair Inn, has purchased the distinctive yellow house at 416 W. First

The 24-year-old Unger is excited about owning her own business and is quick to give credit where credit is due, especially her co-workers.

"I have confidence in the girls who work here and in myself," she said, adding that everyone gets along with "no drama."

"Sometimes you get a bunch of women together and it doesn't work," she said. But here, it does, with everyone respecting each other's talents.

She also gives credit to her family, who have supported her decisions.

Unger graduated from McCook High School in 2009 and attended the College of Hair Design in Lincoln for two years. She moved back to McCook with her daughter and as owner of the Hair Inn, she has already completed a few upgrades.

She spruced up the inside, with new paint and opening up a wall. The outdoor sign has been re-painted and Unger will soon open a pedicure/manicure station.

Also new is the special walk-in rate on Thursdays, when the salon is open until 7 p.m. For $12, someone without an appointment can walk in and get a cut, without a style or wash. This works good for those who have extra time, on their lunch hour or after work, she said, know what they want or forgot to make an appointment.

With four stylists on board, there is plenty of experience to go around. Ruth Miner has been with The Hair Inn for 18 years, shortly after it first opened and specializes in perms and haircuts.

Lacy Krueger does color, as well as cuts, as does Unger. Former "Green Herb" owner Karla Morford also does cuts and perms.

Nothing is off-limits for Unger and Krueger, when it comes to new colors or styles. "I'm always up to a challenge, to try something different," Unger said.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Call the Hair Inn at 345-1111 for an appointment or consultation, or Unger at 340-7807 to request a stylist.

A grand opening is planned Aug. 21, with door prizes all day. The Hair Inn also has a Facebook page.
