Storm damage

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

The metal roof of a cinder block building on Old Highway 6 west of McCook, Nebraska, wraps over the roof of a metal building immediately north of it on Highway 6&34, both buildings south of 6&34 and south of C&K and Denim & Duds. Red Willow County Sheriff Gene Mahon said the damage to the buildings, owned by Neal Corey of rural McCook, and to several rural power poles was the only storm damage reported to his office this morning. Red Willow Western Rural and Indianola firefighters responded southeast of McCook to pasture fires started by lightning associated with the late-evening thunderstorm. Red Willow Western Fire Chief Bill Elliott said the fires were hard to fight because the country is "horribly, terribly rough." He said he appreciated the help of neighbors who brought tractors to help fight the fires. The McCook airport reported .32 of an inch of rain, although rain gauges south of McCook caught rainfall amounts closer to an inch.
