Pullin' for Moore

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Antique tractor pullers at Maywood, Nebraska's annual "Old Glory Days" Sunday support a project coordinated by Lou Werkmeister and the Maywood Lions Club to "Pull for Moore" -- not for more power or more distance, but for Moore, Oklahoma. Lou told pullers he was touched by a video of an old farmer, wearing bib overalls, "reminding me of my father," sitting in front of what used to be his home after the Oklahoma tornadoes May 20. "It was horrifying to watch EMS digging kids out of the Crown Plaza School," Lou said, as he accepted generous pullers' winnings to send to the school principal for the school's recovery efforts. Fellow pull coordinator, Clint Littell, thanked pullers, "We think we've got it bad -- someone's always got it worse." Proceeds from the Lions' concession stand at the tractor pull were also donated to the "Pullin' for Moore" project. Ken Foland of Sidney placed his lawn chair on the front lines of the pull, watching Jim Russell of Benkelman compete with his 1943 John Deere B. Black smoke poured from Josh Tobiason's red tractor, while 8-year-old Elyse Richards of Cheyenne, Wyoming, helped her grandpa, J.R. Barkell of Lodgepole, prepare his 1954 John Deere 60 for competition. Reprints available at mccookgazette.com.
