Oberlin boys win Kansas 2A state golf title

OBERLIN, Kan. -- The Decatur Community High School boys golf team is celebrating a state championship.

The Red Devils from Oberlin won the Kansas Class 2A state tournament title last Monday at the Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City.

Oberlin carded a low team total of 339 strokes in the one-day, 18-hole state competition. The battle for the top spot was close, as Sterling finished just three strokes behind the Devils. Ellis was third with a 343, and Meade fourth at 347.

Kade Brown, headed to Creighton University in Omaha on a golf scholarship, led Oberlin with a runner-up finish in the individual team standings. Brown shot a 76 to finish one stroke behind individual state champ Hunter Burnett of Elkhart.

Kelly Brown finished in 11th place for the Devils with an 82. Zach May shot a 90 to place 41th, and teammate Tyler Bruggeman was 42th with a 91. Ryan May also shot a 95 to finish 52nd, and Logan Berry was 54th with a 96.

RAWLINS COUNTY of Atwood also competed in the Kansas Class 1A boys state golf meet last Monday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Atwood shot a 383 total in the 18-hole event to finish fourth in the final team standings.

Wakeeney-Trego Community shot a low team total of 330 strokes to run away with the state title. Olpe was second with a 353, followed by Ashland with a 366 and Rawlins County with a 383.

Atwood was paced by Hunter Leibrandt and Jake Williams, each with a 93. Heath Dunker shot a 95 and Michael Blodgett had a 102. James Peterson shot 104 and Justin Engel 139 for the Buffalos.
