Wednesday, May 8, 2013

HAYES CENTER, Nebraska -- The Hayes Center American Legion Post No. 287 is pleased to announce their representatives for Cornhusker Boys' State. Seth Gohl of Hayes Center and Garrett Smith of McCook will attend the 73rd Annual Session, June 2-June 8, in Lincoln.

Gohl, a junior at Hayes Center High School, is the son of Patty Gohl and the late Russell Gohl. His grandparents are Melva Gohl of Hayes Center and Leland and Irene Nelson, from Bushnell, Nebraska.

Also representing the American Legion Post No. 287 in the 2013 session is Garrett Smith. Smith is a junior attending McCook High School, in McCook, Nebraska. Smith's parents are Curtis and Jennifer Smith of McCook. His grandparents are Jerry and Beverly Unger of Hayes Center, and Jerry and Kathy Smith of Brighton, Colorado.

Boys' State is a plan for educating youth in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. The program is non-partisan and not military in any sense. It is wholly a plan for training in the practical aspects of government. It is functional in that applications of the principles of a democratic government are made in every possible way. Boys' State should be thought of as being a mythical 51st state with a constitution, statutes and ordinances constructed by the citizens to govern themselves.

Both students are charter members of the Sons of the American Legion Post No. 287 in Hayes Center and assist the American Legion with various programs and duties.
