Bryn Carriker, a junior at McCook Senior High, displays the personalized portfolio that was presented to her May 1 for winning the Law Day Essay contest. The contest was sponsored by the Nebraska Supreme Court and the Nebraska State Bar Foundation. Presenting the award was McCook attorney Stan Goodwin, back, second from left, Vice President of the Bar Foundation along with District Court Judge David Urbom, front, right. Goodwin said, "Being a McCook lawyer and vice president of the Foundation, I'm very pleased that one of our students in McCook and mentored by one of our teachers, won this prestigious award." The contest asked participants to select their favorite patriotic symbol, song, holiday or activity and tell how it contributes to the development of better citizens. Carriker said she wrote her essay on the picture of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima because she visited the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D. C. during a 4-H trip. Carriker also won a $100 gift card from Cornhusker Bank of Lincoln and a certificate of achievement award. The award presentation included a classroom party in Richard Smock's room, the social studies teacher at MHS. Also shown is Bryn's father, Ken Carriker, front left, and Richard Smock, back.
