LAWRENCE, Kan. -- McCook High School entered two of its top runners in the prestigious Kansas Relays Friday, April 19.

The Bison duo didn't disappoint.

McCook competitors Molly Sughroue and Austin Cherry both turned in season-best times in their respective 800-meter run events Friday afternoon in the high school division at the Kansas University track in Lawrence.

Molly Sughroue finished third in the girls 800 with a season-fast time of 2 minutes, 15.98 seconds. Molly ran in the last of three heats of the girls 800. Molly finished less than a second out of second place, with the winning time 2:12.81.

Sughroue's time was just short of her all-time 800 best mark of 2:15.199 set at last year's Class B state meet in Omaha. Sughroue ranks second on the all-time McCook girls top 10 chart in the two-lap race, trailing Carol Nunnally's 2:13.8 set at the 1980 state meet.

Austin Cherry placed second in the boys 800-meter run at the KU Relays with a season-best time of 1:56.21. The winning time was 1:55.54. Cherry ran in the last of three heats in the KU Relays high school boys 800.

Cherry's season-best effort in the two-lap race was just short of his career-best time of 1:55.42 set at last May's Class B state meet. Austin has the second fastest boys 800 time in McCook track history, trailing older brother Josh Cherry's 1:55.38 set at the 2006 state meet.
