Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Jesse Detty of McCook gets ready to take off in the boys pole vault at the Bison-North Platte dual track and field meet March 22 at the McCook High School stadium. Detty placed fourth when he cleared 12 feet even.

The early spring season in Nebraska is very unpredictable as far as weather goes.

The McCook High School track and field teams had their first outdoor meet of the 2013 season Friday, March 22, when North Platte came to the high school stadium for a dual meet with the Bison squads. A blustery day turned downright cold when the final events rolled around near sundown.

The McCook teams each claimed victory over their Bulldog counterparts. The Bison girls beat North Platte, 94.5-37.5, while the McCook boys outscored the Dawgs, 76.5-64.5.

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Caitlin Leitner works hard as she rounds the curve in the girls 400-meter dash at the McCook-North Platte track and field meet March 22 in McCook. Leitner won the race with a time of 1 minute, 4.6 seconds. McCook's boys and girls each topped North Platte in the final team standings.

The top three finishers in each individual event and the first-place relay team earn team points for both squads.

Both Bison coaches were pleased with the way their respective teams competed in the chilly conditions.

"The important thing, as a team, is how we competed against each other, as to where our different athletes might line up in events for down the road," said McCook girls head coach Steve Clapp. "It was nice to beat North Platte, but that probably wasn't our main objective in this meet. I think our main objective was just simply to, especially in our throwing events and field events where we have eight or nine kids competing, to see how they stack up against each other.

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Hannah Esch of McCook takes the baton from teammate Molly Sughroue in the girls 1,600-meter relay at the Bison-North Platte track and field meet March 22.

"For the amount of days some of them have actually practiced and the type of weather we've had at times to practice in, I think we had some exceptional marks."

Bison boys head coach Tom Sughroue echoed those sentiments.

"Very pleased with the way our kids performed. A lot of nice things went on," Sughroue said. "Not ideal conditions by any means. We had some awful nice performances."

Steve Kodad/McCook Daily Gazette Cody Wudtke (front) of McCook takes the baton from Zayne Gillen in the boys 400-meter relay at the Bison-North Platte track and field meet March 22 in McCook. Wudtke and Gillen teamed with Peyton Stagemeyer and Austin Cherry to win the relay with a fast time of 44.1 seconds.

THE BISON GIRLS captured first-place finishes in nine of the 10 running events contested. One of the top efforts for the bison girls came from middle-distance star Molly Sughroue. junior turned in a strong performance in the 800-meter run with her first-place time of 2 minutes, 21.7 seconds, about five seconds off her personal-best time.

Sophomore Asti Randa won two events for the McCook girls. Randa was first in the 100-meter dash at 13.6 seconds, nipping teammate and fellow sophomore Kaity Elder. Randa also won the 200 at 27.9 seconds, with Elder close behind in second.

Senior Maddie Elder swept the girls throwing gold medals. Elder won the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 8 inches, and she also was first in the discus at 113-10.

Abi Mohr was first in the 100-meter high hurdles at 17.2 seconds. Mohr also cleared 10 feet even in the pole vault, losing first place by virtue of more total missed attempts.

Caitlin Leitner finished first in the girls 400-meter dash for McCook. The junior was clocked in 1 minute 4.6 seconds. Senior Veronica Bair also won the 1,600-meter run with her time of 6:16.4. Senior Rachel Goltl turned in a strong early-season time with her first-place finish in the 300 hurdles at 51.2 seconds.

Senior Madison Chitwood also claimed the high jump title with a best mark of 4 feet, 10 inches. McCook also won two of the three girls relay races.

CODY WUDTKE was one of the leaders for the Bison boys.

Wudtke won three events, sweeping the sprints with fast first-place times in the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.0). Wudtke also cleared 6-2 for first in the high jump. The senior also anchored the winning 400-meter relay team, joining Peyton Stagemeyer, Austin Cherry and Zayne Gillen for a 44.1 clocking.

Jake Schlager hit another strong early-season mark in the long jump, winning with a leap of 21 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Schlager was held out of the sprints, and he should help push the Bison 400 relay to fast times when he's back in the lineup.

The Collicott twins ruled the boys throwing events for the Bison. Mitch Collicott won the shot put with a strong throw of 49 feet, 10 inches. Matt Collicott topped the discus throwers with a mark of 140-11.

CHERRY WAS FAST in the 400 with a winning time of 51.3 seconds. Jacob Riemann also won the 300 hurdles with a strong early-season time of 43.2 seconds. Riemann also finished second in the 110 high hurdles.

Senior Kyle Stewart hit 13-6 in the pole vault, just short of his personal best, to finish second.

The Bison also won the 1,600 relay.
