Annual Humane Society rummage sale set for April

Friday, March 22, 2013

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The McCook, Nebraska, Humane Society's 32nd annual rummage sale in April will include two new evening "bag sales," offering early-bird shoppers two additional opportunities to shop.

Humane society president Anne Dowd and her corps of volunteers plan the two bag sales on Tuesday, April 16, and Thursday, April 18, from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The big sale days will be Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday, April 21, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

All activities -- drop-offs and sales -- will be in the 4-H Building on the Red Willow County fairgrounds in the 1500 block of West Fifth in McCook. Anne appreciates volunteers who stop by to help sort donations, and to man the sales floor on the day of the sales.

Rummage sale activities will follow this schedule this year:

* Monday, April 8; Tuesday, April 9, Wednesday, April 10; and Thursday, April 11, drop-off days, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

* Friday, April 12, a "fluff and fold" day to start organizing donations; no donations will be accepted that day.

* Saturday, April 13, 1 p.m. until 6 p.m., drop off items.

* Monday, April 15, drop off items from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

* Tuesday, April 16, drop off items from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., and a $5 per bag "bag sale" from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. (using WalMart-size plastic bags -- bring-your-own or use some of the shelter's).

* Wednesday, April 17, drop off items from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

* Thursday, April 18, drop off items from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., and another "bag sale" from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

* Friday, April 19, a "fluff and fold day," no items will be accepted.

* Saturday, April 20, first day of the big sale, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

* Sunday, April 21, second and final day of the big sale, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Anne said volunteers are needed each day of collecting and the sales. "Just show up and volunteer," she encourages.

Volunteers will accept clean, gently-used clothing and shoes of all sizes and seasons; bedding and pillows; toys and dolls; purses and luggage; furniture, lamps and decorating items; books and magazines; records, DVD's, movies and CD's; lawn and garden items; hand tools, electric tools, chainsaws and garage, woodworking and shop supplies; holiday decor; craft items and supplies; small kitchen appliances and dishes, cups and glasses; bikes, trikes, scooters, sleds, skates and skateboards; and knick-knacks of all sorts.

They will not accept large appliances, water beds or computers and their accessories.

Many very nice items and antiques and collectibles are placed on a select silent auction.

By state law, buyers will be charged sales tax,

Shoplifters will be prosecuted, or made to scoop poop.

Do not drop off items at the shelter because they don't have room to store anything nor do they have pickups to transfer them.

Volunteers will not be able to deliver items the days of the sales.
