McCook National Bank announces scholarship winners

McCOOK, Nebraska -- MNB Student of the Month Scholarship finalists and their families were recognized at the third annual MNB Scholarship Banquet and Ceremony March 4 in McCook. The $500 tuition scholarships were awarded to Brendan Johnsen of Medicine Valley High School and Sara Larington of McCook High School.

Brendan Johnsen is the son of Scott and Shawna Johnsen. He is a senior at Medicine Valley High School with a 4.0 GPA. During high school Brendan has been active in football, basketball, golf, and quiz bowl. He has also been involved in FFA, national honor society, student council and has served as a class officer. Brendan has been recognized for academic all-state for football and golf. In the community, Brendan has volunteered as a little league baseball umpire and basketball official and contributed to many 4-H events as well as church youth activities. Brendan plans to major in Math Education.

Sara Larington is the daughter of Dan and Michelle Larington. She is a senior at McCook High School with a 4.0 GPA. During high school Sara has excelled in tennis, swim team and FFA. She has also been active in national honor society, Interact, math club and 4-H. Sara has been recognized at district music competitions and is a United States Achievement Academy Member. She also represented Nebraska at the National 4-H Congress. In the community, Sara volunteers for the Salvation Army, Feed My Starving Children and various church youth activities and mission trips. Sara plans to attend the University of Nebraska at Kearney and major in Speech Pathology.

Students were eligible for the scholarship after being named an MNB Student of the Month winner as high school juniors. Scholarship finalists included Kate Kelley' Southwest High School; Brooklyn Trew, McCook High School; Sara Larington, McCook High School; Kelsey Siebrandt, McCook High School; Riley Garey, Medicine Valley High School; and Brendan Johnsen, Medicine Valley High School.

The MNB Student of the Month Award is designed to recognize one area student, every month from September through April, for their accomplishments and hard work. Academics, extracurricular school activities, as well as other community activities are all factors in determining a winner. The award is open to area juniors and nominations for the award must be submitted by area teachers, guidance counselors, or administrative staff of the student's school to be considered.
