McCook High School students Veronica Bair (left) and Cash Bortner (right) take Analytical Geometry & Calculus II at McCook Community College and recently invited MCC Instructor Michael Jonckheere to speak to their MHS Math club, of which Bair is president. Jonckheere spoke to the MHS group on "Cantor's Paradise," basing his talk on Georg Cantor, one of the founding fathers of "set theory" which underlies all of modern mathematics. Cantor investigated the question of whether all infinite sets have the same size or whether there is more than one size of infinity. Jonckheere said the answer is "surprising, fascinating, and pivotal in higher level mathematics."

  • I hate to question the speaker's "infinite" wisdom, or come off as too "set" in my way of thinking, but more than one size of infinity? Something doesn't add up here!
