Orville Henry Pinn

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota -- Orville Pinn of Sioux Falls, formerly of Culbertson, Nebraska, passed away at the Bethany Lutheran Home on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013.

Orville was born on Dec. 2, 1936, in Culbertson, to Henry and Anna (Gaiser) Pinn; He was baptized and confirmed in the Culbertson Methodist Church. He was a lifelong member of the church. Orville attended Culbertson Public School and graduated in 1954. In August of 1954, Orville started college in Milford, studying auto body repair. Orville returned home to Culbertson in November of 1954, due to the death of his sister, Evelyn Clark. He and his mother traveled to Texas to bring his three nephews home to Culbertson.

Orville joined the U.S. Army in January of 1955 and was stationed overseas in Korea for 18 months. He was honorably discharged in 1958. In the fall of 1958, Orville began college at McCook Junior College majoring in business. He earned his associate's degree in business in 1960. He began his career at the Culbertson Elevator. In 1962, he went to work for what is now known at Nebraska Public Power District in McCook. He continued to work at NPPD until ill health forced him to retire in 1994.

Orville married Carol Carter on Aug. 4, 1963, in Arapahoe, Nebraska. They were blessed with two children, Jon Lorence and Janel Ranae. Orville spent much of his time attending his children's events. His family was his top priority. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, his 1954 Ford NAA tractor, auctions, Husker sports and being a hobby farmer. He loved going on summer vacations, Estes Park, Colorado was his favorite destination. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the United Methodist Men and held several offices. He took great pride in living in Culbertson. He was born and raised in the same house that he used to raise his own family. He continued to live there until his health forced him to move in 2012. He was very proud of his four grandchildren and they always brought a smile to his face.

Orville will especially remembered for his faith, his love of family and his compassion for others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry (1948) and Anna (1975) Pinn; half siblings, Katie, Fay, Fern, George, Glen, Alva and Evelyn; sister-in-law, Jean Weatherwax and brother-in-law, Galen Carter.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol; his son, Jon and wife, Heidi, Sioux Falls; his daughter, Janel and husband, Tim Hynek, Fairbury, Nebraska; his grandchildren, Adam and Daniel Pinn and Abby and Kate Hynek; his nephews, Michael and Ann Clark, Collinsville, Texas, James and Kathy Clark of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and Ronald and Mary Clark of Salem, Illinois; his brothers-in-law, Frank and Vi Weatherwax of Niobrara, Nebraska, Don and Lori Carter of Rock Springs, Wyoming and Richard and Lulu Mae Carter of McCook, Nebraska; his sister-in-law, Bonnie and Meryl Johnson of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service in Sioux Falls will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

A memorial service in Culbertson, Nebraska, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with inurnment in the Culbertson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to the Trinity United Methodist Church of Culbertson or the Sioux Falls Lutheran School.
