Prizes, giveaways set for 'Shoot for the Shelter'
McCOOK, Nebraska -- This is the seventh year that area's businesses have donated prizes for the "Shoot for the Shelter" pool tournament Saturday, Jan. 26, according to Lorie Prestes, coordinator.
The tournament will again be at the Republican River Valley Event Center and Kelley Creek Pub, with proceeds going to the McCook Humane Society.
"I was told that Steve Clark and his wonderful staff are ready for us!" Prestes said. "There will be some awesome food provided by Scott and Smitty's Country Kitchen. They'll start serving by 10:30 a.m. and a portion of what they make they will donate to the McCook Humane Society. Folks, I have tasted this food and it is awesome!"
The tournament will be 8Ball (APA Rules) - Blind Draw Doubles - Alternate Shot - Double Elimination.
The entry fee is a $25 donation to the McCook Humane Society.
Pre-Registration is going on now but it's filling up fast, Prestes said, so early registration is encouraged. Those who pre-register will receive a package that contains a free T- shirt, along with a door prize ticket and lots of giveaways and offers from local businesses.
Prizes will be awarded from first to fourth places and these prizes are also provided by area supporters. First place is once again provided by APA Pool League. Joe and Carmen Bond have donated APA Pool Cues valued at $119 each, along with the APA case valued at $139 each.
Second place is provided by Nebraska TAP Pool League. Darin Hoffmaster has donated pool cues valued at $119 and accessories. Third and fourth place prizes have been donated by WalMart of McCook, Kugler's, Taste of Texas, D & S Hardware, Casey's, Schamel's NAPA and Lord's Hardware of Indianola.
The tournament will also once again have a Calcutta, where the teams will be auctioned off for chances for prize money. Dennis Youngs has agreed again to handle the Calcutta, which will begin promptly at 10 a.m., with the tournament beginning right after.
Prestes explained other prizes that will be available. "When you first walk in the door at Kelley Creek Pub, the door prizes and raffle items are displayed proudly! I can't think of anyone that has left the tournament without winning something," she said. "We've got special raffle items like an autographed cue donated by TAP Pool League, this cue retails for $140, but it's autographed by Earl Strickland, Shawn Putnam, Nick Varner and Johnny Archer (these pros have all been on the Mosconi Cup team)! Sears of McCook has donated a Double Hoop Basketball Game for another special raffle item. Monica Conroy has outdone herself this year and has gone all out and put together an incredible gift ensemble nestled inside a Jack Daniels ice chest. She's also put together a "liquor basket" and a comfort basket. We've got a one of a kind hand-painted turkey feather, a piece of artwork by Michelle Lytle.
Additional door prizes include those from: Farrell's Pharmacy, Game On, 7-D Lockshop, Ag Valley C-Store of Indianola, NORML Nebraska, American Electric, Avon by Sandy Bailey, Barnett's Do-It Center, Titan Machinery (formerly Curly Olney's), Pet Pro's, Orscheln's, Burrow's Vision Clinic, Denim & Duds, C & K Hardware, Eake's Office Plus, Horizon Bank, Acme Touch Printing, VK Electronics, SouthWest Implement, Frenchman Valley Co-Op, Cowboy Up Tack, Outdoor Sports, Renalle's Classic Hair Design, The Spirit Shop/The Bottle Shop, Wagner Chevrolet, Whitaker Furniture, Kildare Lumber and Miller & Associates (Brian provides the tournaments with brackets). "These generous folks donate to this event every year, and this is just who all has donated so far," Prestes said.
She also cited The McCook Daily Gazette and KICX for media coverage, McCook Lettering for t-shirts and Kelley Creek Pub for the wait staff. "Tip them well - they will have earned it during this event!' Prestes said. McCook Humane Society Board members and volunteers will be on hand to help with the tournament.
