CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska -- Expecting their first child within days, Melissa Wright and Dane tenBensel of Arapahoe, Nebraska, watched the New Year's Eve ball drop Monday at midnight, "and I was having contractions," Melissa said.

The little boy born about 19 1⁄2 hours later is the McCook Daily Gazette's, the Cambridge Memorial Hospital's and the Cambridge Clarion's "New Year's Baby 2013."

The couple's baby wasn't due until Jan. 5, Melissa said. But her contractions started, the roads were good, "and he came pretty fast," Melissa said, smiling.

Jamisen Arend tenBensel was born New Year's Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1, at 7:43 p.m., delivered by Dr. Shelly Kaspar-Cope at Tri Valley Health System Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

"Jamisen" is a name in the baby name book that both Melissa and Dane liked, they agreed. "Arend is my middle name," Dane said.

Dane works for Ron Robinson Farms at Alma; Melissa cleans the Cambridge Clinic at Tri Valley Health Systems.

Melissa smiles, "Jamisen's been great so far. He sleeps a lot, and he's pretty quiet."

The little guy's grandparents are: Doug and Anne Gahn of Lincoln and Toby and Mary tenBensel of Holbrook. His great-grandparents are: Ron and Doris Blume of Indianola and Dean and Wanda tenBensel of Arapahoe. His great-great-grandparents are: Hazel Cross of Arapahoe, Alyce Mae Stritt of Indianola and Jane and Charles McConville of Indianola.

As the Gazette area's first baby of 2013, Jamisen and his parents win a prize package from these businesses: the McCook Daily Gazette, Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Community Hospital of McCook, McCook Clinic PC, Schmick's Market, MNB Youth Services, USave Pharmacy and Medical Supply and Walmart.

Honorable mention goes to Draivon Zander Scarbrough, born to Eric and Brittanie Scarbrough at 8:17 a.m. today at Community Hospital in McCook. He weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 201⁄2 inches long.
