Last night, 'First night'

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

McCook, Nebraska, celebrates the last night of 2012 and the "First Night" of 2013 with New Year's Eve fun-and-games coordinated by the McCook Rotary Club. Kids' games occupied 5-year-old Isabella Garcia, while a group of like-aged boys helped John Paul Kain count the marbles he retrieved -- using only his toes -- from a tub of ice. Behind the face paint and masks of many youngsters wandering the downtown streets were cousins Claire Coady, left, and Konnar and Cadince Coady. Performers at the Museum of the High Plains included singers Jerri Lynn -- on her concert ukulele -- and Darrin Karr, and actors Mikayla Packard and Jesus Sameniego (who, after a bump on his head, sees predictions of the future typing out on a "blue Royal typewriter"). On Norris Avenue at midnight, a couple of hundred revelers celebrated as fireworks lit up the sky.
